Hidcote28 September 2017
Often referred to as one of most influential English gardens of the 20th century. buffalozoo was asked to create a sense of place, telling the story of the man behind Hidcote and it’s gardens, Lawrence Johnston 1871-1958. His life, experiences, influences and his legacy today.
Setting the scene within three rooms in the Manor House, the stories included; A passion for plant hunting, Lawrence Johnston, creator of Hidcote and Creating the garden at Hidcote.
We approached this project first and foremost to be totally engaging with the public. Every piece of interpretation is free-standing, as nothing was allowed to be attached to the walls. A wide variety of materials were used and where appropriate we sourced props which was in keeping with the sense of place and the exact time that Lawrence Johnston would have been alive. The ladders for the timeline for example are dated around the 1920s.
Installation day was so much fun as the first visitors to see our new work told us how they loved how it all looked, how easy the information was laid out to read and some even completed the ‘feedback cards’ before we left for the day. A great project from start to finish.
